The Vatican has come out swinging.

Men and women are fundamentally different and notions of “gender fluidity” cause harmful “disorientation” among families and children, concludes a  controversial new report by the Roman Catholic Church’s official Congregation for Catholic Education. The document roundly criticized the idea, widely used in sexual-education courses throughout the Western world, that sexual identity is a matter of choice, not immutable biology.

The report, entitled “Male and Female He Created Them: Toward A Path Of Dialogue On The Question Of Gender In Education,” finds that:“The disorientation regarding anthropology which is a widespread feature of our cultural landscape has undoubtedly helped to destabilize the family as an institution…bringing with it a tendency to cancel out the differences between men and women, presenting them instead as merely the product of historical and cultural conditioning.”

The report directly criticizes the conventional wisdom among educators. “According to such theories, the only thing that matters in personal relationships is the affection between the individuals involved, irrespective of sexual difference or procreation which would be seen as irrelevant in the formation of families. Thus, the institutional model of the family (where a structure and finality exist independent of the subjective preferences of the spouses) is bypassed, in favor of a vision of family that is purely contractual and voluntary.”

Conversely, the Congregation cited several points of agreement with LGBT advocates, including the importance of female equality with men, the evil of past persecution of individuals based on immutable traits, and the inherent dignity of every human being. “Indeed, it cannot be denied that through the centuries forms of unjust discrimination have been a sad fact of history and have also had an influence within the Church.”

Critics swiftly condemned the report. “The Vatican’s new document on gender identity, “Male and Female He Created Them,” is a harmful tool that will be used to oppress and harm not only transgender people, but lesbian, gay, bisexual people, too.  The document associates sexual and gender minorities with libertine sexuality, a gross misrepresentation of the lives of LGBT people which perpetuates and encourages hatred, bigotry, and violence against them,” said New Ways Ministry executive Director Francis DeBernardo in a prepared response.

The duel over sexual identity between the world’s largest Christian denomination and the LGBT activists is likely to continue indefinitely. Christians and Jews first condemned homosexuality when its practice became widespread in Israel’s Greek-dominated coastal cities in the First Century A.D.
